REJECT NEO-NAZIS’ SUPPORT FOR SB 458

Hostile rhetoric during the 2023 Montana Legislative session isn’t just talk. Repeated attacks on LGBTQ+ rights have very real consequences.  

The Montana Human Rights Network just confirmed a tip that racists active with the National Socialist Movement – literal modern neo-Nazis – just posted their support for the anti-trans bill SB 458 on extremist hangouts Gab and Telegram. White nationalist channels on these extremist platforms are full of racist, antisemitic, transphobic, and homophobic rhetoric, but this is the first time we have seen support for a specific bill in the current Montana Legislature. 

SB 458 is a confusing, 61-page bill that erases the existence of transgender, nonbinary, and Two Spirit people. This aggressive legislation would prevent people from getting accurate identity documents, misgender people on marriage certificates, revoke marriage equality, prevent trans people from participating in sports, and so much more. It’s not difficult to see why neo-Nazis are praising this bill.  

MHRN has been tracking far-right extremist groups for more than 30 years because we know that these organizations want to do real harm.  They actively work to attack and dismantle the essential rights of people who regularly face discrimination in their personal and professional lives. If modern-day Nazis are endorsing a bill, that’s a clear sign that this bill is a danger to dignity and safety and must be stopped. 

Please call or write your Senator and tell them to vote no on SB 458. There is no reason that Montana should endorse a bill that attempts to erase the existence of Montana residents and force them into definitions that ignore current medical and scientific knowledge.
